Bronchodilators      
Generic Name: Albuterol Brand Name: Proventil®
  Albuterol   Ventolin®
  Isoetharine HCl   Bronkometer®
  Metaproterenol   Alupent®
       
Common Use: Used to treat or prevent the symptoms of asthma, emphysema and other breathing conditions. It may also be used to prevent the symptoms of exercise-induced asthma.
   
Purpose: Dilates (widens) bronchioles of the lung by relaxing smooth muscles of bronchioles.
  Prevents spasms and/or contractions.
  Allows better air exchange.
  May assist in removing mucous and other debris that causes congestion in the lungs.
   
Possible Side Effects: May cause fast heart rate, nervousness, tremors, headache, difficulty sleeping or nausea. If they continue or are bothersome, contact your doctor. Also, you should notify your doctor if you have any of the following symptoms: palpitations, chest pain muscle tremors, dizziness, headache, flushing or if breathing difficulty persists.
   
Anticholinergic      
Generic Name: Ipratropium Brand Name: Atrovent®
       
Common Use: Used to prevent the symptoms of emphysema or chronic bronchitis.
   
Purpose: Dilates (widens) large airways.
  Dries up secretions.
  Blocks the action of acetylcholine.
   
Possible Side Effects: May cause nervousness, dizziness, headache, nausea,
Effects: upset stomach, dry mouth, throat irritation or cough.
Temporary blurred vision may occur if sprayed into eyes. Follow instructions for use accompanying the product. Close eyes when administering. Check with your doctor as soon as possible if you
experience a rash or rapid or irregular heart rate.
   
Mast Cell Inhibitors      
Generic Name: Cromolyn Sodium Brand Name: Intal®
       
Common Use: Used for the prevention and relief of exercised-induced bronchospasm. It is anti-asthmatic and anti-allergic stabilizer of mast cells. It is not effective for the relief of acute symptoms, such
as an asthma attack.
   
Purpose: Decreases narrowing of airways due to histamine reaction.
  Decreases severity of allergy attacks.
   
Possible Side Effects: May cause dizziness, headaches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea,
Effects: coughing, wheezing or throat irritation. Notify your doctor if symptoms continue or are bothersome. Should not be used if you have cardiac arrhythmia's. Should be used with caution if you have kidney or liver impairment.
   
Mucolytic Enzyme      
Generic Name: Dornase Alfa Dnase Brand Name: Pulmozyme®
       
Common Use: Helps manage the ling problems usually associated with cystic fibrosis. A mucous thinning agent.
   
Purpose: To decrease the number of lung infections that require intravenous antibiotics.
   
Possible Side Effects: Side effects with dornase alpha are generally mild and go away within a few weeks. They include hoarseness, pharyngitis and larynigits. Also, chest pain, rash and conjunctivitis have been reported. It is recommended to keep all other inhaled medication systems completely separate from dornase alfa. Do not use any other inhaled medications inthe nebulizer at the same time.
